For most 10 year olds, A Quiet Place is close, and the hardest part is not any one scene but how little relief the movie gives between them. It is rated PG-13 in the US and scores 64 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, mostly from sustained dread: a child is killed in the first five minutes, the family lives in near-total silence to survive, and the father sacrifices himself near the end. What we flagged is mostly tension and loss, and once it starts the movie leaves little room to look away.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The opening death and the sustained tension of a child-in-peril story are built for an older, patient audience, not a first watch for a child this young who still needs quick resolution and regular reassurance that everyone is fine.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

Still no for most. The movie's quiet is the whole point, and that quiet makes even its smaller scares land harder on a young audience than a louder horror movie would.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

The threshold. A patient 10 or 11 year old who can sit with sustained tension and a sad ending handles it well; a kid who needs quick resolution or regular jump scares finds the pacing more unsettling than the creature.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

The intended audience. The father's sacrifice becomes the point rather than a problem at this age, and most teenagers read the sustained quiet as craft rather than as something to brace against for two hours.

Where the big moments land

The scenes below are the opening death, the birth scene under threat, and the father's sacrifice. The opening is brief but unmistakable, and it sets the rule the rest of the movie never breaks.

The bottom line

A horror movie that earns its PG-13 by what it withholds rather than what it shows. Most 10 year olds who can sit with long stretches of tension are ready, but know going in that the quiet never really lets up.

Content map

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.

Direction is the kind of content flagged. Reach is the ScoutScore, which is how much there is: green at the centre, yellow, orange, then red at the dotted line, which is 100. The scale has no ceiling, so a shape can cross it.
