For most 8 year olds, Chamber of Secrets is fine, and it is the entry where the series starts drawing blood, figuratively and once, almost literally. It scores 68 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, carried by a disembodied voice that stalks the halls promising to kill, a basilisk that poisons Harry near to death, and a colony of spiders large enough to eat a boy. Dobby's self-punishment early on is a smaller, stranger thing to explain. Kids who loved the first movie are ready for this one turning the lights down.
A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.
Wait. The killing voice in the walls and the spider colony are built from a young child's specific fears, and the movie gives both room to breathe.
The real threshold. A kid who handled the troll in the first movie usually manages the spiders and the voice, but the basilisk sequence, where Harry is visibly dying of venom, is longer and more frightening than anything in Sorcerer's Stone. Know that scene before you press play.
The sweet spot. The mystery plotting lands properly and the basilisk fight reads as a real climax rather than an ordeal.
Nothing to manage. An easy rewatch on the way to the darker entries.
