Is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire OK for a 9 Year Old?

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) · Rated PG · the answer, age by age

63
ScoutScore · BOLD

For most 9 year olds, Goblet of Fire is where many families pause, and they are right to notice the shift. It scores 63 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, and it is the first of the series to carry a PG-13 rating. The number matters less than the reason: this is the movie where a likable student is murdered on screen, casually, and where Voldemort stops being a face on the back of a head and becomes a body in a graveyard.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. This is a different series than the one that started at Privet Drive.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

Wait, even for kids who sailed through the first three. Cedric's death is sudden, on screen, and mourned at length, and the resurrection ritual involves blood taken from a bound and screaming Harry. The movie intends these to land hard. They do.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

The real question, and it depends on which 9 to 11 year old. A child who has read the book and knows what is coming usually manages it well, and the death opens one of the series' most valuable conversations. A child riding the movies alone hits the graveyard unprepared. Consider the book first, or a heads up before the third act.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

The intended audience from here through the finale. The series ages with them now.

The bottom line

The movie where the series trades wonder for stakes in a single graveyard. It is the right threshold to pause at, and the best one in the series to cross deliberately, together, rather than let a marathon decide.
