For most 7 year olds, The Incredibles is a yes with real stakes attached. It scores 46 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and the number sits near the top of its tier for a reason: missiles blow the family's plane apart with the kids aboard, guards open fire on Dash and Violet in the jungle, and Syndrome talks openly about killing supers. Nobody important dies, and the family's teamwork is the actual point of every fight. The action is bigger than most PG cartoons attempt.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

Wait. The missile attack on the family plane and the guards firing on the kids in the jungle are built to feel like real danger, not a cartoon chase, and that is exactly the effect at this age too.

Ages 6 to 8 DEPENDS

The honest threshold. Kids who can watch the plane attack and the jungle chase without needing to look away are ready for the rest; a kid who startles easily should wait a year.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

The sweet spot. The family-first message and Syndrome's real menace both land as intended, and the action reads as thrilling rather than frightening, without needing a parent nearby for reassurance.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Nothing to manage, and the workplace and marriage jokes finally land at this age too, alongside a real appreciation for how well the action sequences are staged and paced.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are the film's escalation from capture to attack to rescue. The missile attack is the one to be in the room for, since it is the sharpest turn the movie makes.

The bottom line

The Incredibles is a family that saves each other before it saves the world, and the real violence is aimed at parents who remember hiding a secret life of their own. Say yes once your kid can handle a missile scare, and expect them to ask for capes.
