46 MILD ScoutScore

For most 8 year olds, Return of the Jedi is close, and the scene that decides it is not the one parents expect. It scores 46 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, with a monster pit, an ambush of the rebel fleet, and a scene where the Emperor tortures Luke with lightning while his father watches. Leia in chains is the scene parents remember; the torture is the one that actually lands on a small kid. Kids who have watched the first two usually handle the Rancor and the Sarlacc pit fine. The lightning scene is the one to be ready for.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The Rancor pit and the torture scene are both intense, and two earlier movies of buildup do not make the lightning scene easier to watch at this age.

Ages 6 to 8 DEPENDS

The threshold. A child who has watched the first two Star Wars movies and is fine with the Rancor usually manages this one too, but the torture scene is longer and more pointed than anything before it in the trilogy; know that scene is coming.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Comfortable by now. The stakes of the duel and the father-son ending land as the point of the trilogy rather than as a scare.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Little to manage, and often the most satisfying ending in the series at this age.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below climb in order: a monster pit, a father-son duel, and the torture scene last, which is the one to be in the room for.

The bottom line

Return of the Jedi saves its real menace for a father who finally chooses his son, not for the monster pit everyone warns you about. Most 8 year olds who made it through the first two are ready for this ending, lightning and all.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
