For most 8 year olds, Watership Down is a no that parents discover too late, because it looks like a cartoon about rabbits. It scores 46 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and the tier is honest about the count while understating the effect: rabbits are gassed in their burrows, caught in snares, torn by a dog and each other, with blood drawn plainly in soft watercolor. It is a serious film about survival, and it was never made for small children.
A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.
No. The cartoon look is the trap.
Leaning no. The snare scene, with Bigwig choking and foaming, and the final fight with Woundwort are the moments that have upset generations. An 8 year old who has read the book with you and knows what is coming is the exception.
Readers of the book do well here and find the movie moving. Kids arriving cold from the poster still get ambushed. The difference is preparation, not age.
A genuinely great film at this age, with themes about leadership and tyranny that reward the conversation.

Rabbits drawn softly and killed plainly. Read the book together first and this becomes one of the best movies you will share; watch it cold at 8 and you will remember the snare scene longer than they do.
