For most 8 year olds, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a yes, pitched at the same kid-adventure volume as the movie before it. It scores 47 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and nearly every flag is the same kind: jump scares from ghosts popping into frame, a giant ghost rampaging through the library, and a villain named Garraka who freezes the city. The scares are theme-park scares. What actually needs a second look is the final battle at the firehouse, which carries one quick burst of strong profanity.
A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.
Risky. The attic jump scare, the giant ghost in the library, and the firehouse finale all move fast and loud, and small kids can be startled even though nothing is graphic. The one burst of strong profanity near the end is brief but audible.
Depends on how your kid handles jump scares. Fans of the earlier movie usually manage it fine, since Garraka's freeze and the library rampage resolve quickly and the team always wins. A kid who startles easily may want a hand to hold for the last twenty minutes.
Comfortable. The ghost mythology and the found-family jokes land well, and the one scene with strong profanity passes quickly in the noise of the final battle.
Little to manage, and a satisfying continuation of the found-family storyline the newer movies built. Older fans get the most out of the callbacks to Garraka's backstory and the 1904 prologue.
