45 MILD ScoutScore

For most 7 year olds, Jumanji is a yes with a lot packed into ninety minutes. It scores 45 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, from a board game that unleashes a stalking lion, a giant spider, and a hunter who takes two children hostage at gunpoint inside a crowded store. The creature encounters are frequent and genuinely startling in the moment. Each one resolves fast, and the game's real subject, two orphaned kids and the adult who failed to grow up, gives the scares somewhere to land.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

Wait. The lion, the giant spider, and the hostage scene with gunfire are frequent enough and sudden enough to be a lot for a preschooler, even though each one resolves quickly.

Ages 6 to 8 DEPENDS

The threshold. The hostage scene at the discount store, with a rifle pointed at children, is the one moment that decides it; kids who handle jump scares well get an exciting ride, and one who does not should wait a bit.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Easy, and the orphan grief underneath the adventure starts to register as the real story.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Little to manage. A launchpad into the rest of the franchise.

Where the big moments land

The scenes below are the three biggest set pieces, all packed into the back half of the movie. The discount store hostage scene is the one to be in the room for.

The bottom line

The board game turns a house into a jungle a room at a time, and it never lets the danger stay make-believe for long. Most 7 year olds are ready for the stampede and the lion; the hostage scene at the discount store is the one beat to be in the room for.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
