For most 7 year olds, Return to Oz is the sequel nobody expects: Oz remembered as a fever rather than a dream. It scores 43 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, but the Mild label undersells how strange it is. Dorothy is sent for electroshock therapy in the opening act, the Wheelers shriek on all fours, and a princess keeps a gallery of living heads to swap between. Nothing is violent. Much of it is unsettling.
A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.
Wait. The clinic and the heads are precisely the kind of wrongness small kids cannot explain to themselves.
Depends on the kid, more than almost any movie on this site. Children who like the eerie and the odd find this a treasure and reread it for years. Children who need the world to make sense find the Wheelers and Mombi's head gallery genuinely distressing. Know which one you have.
Comfortable, and often beloved. The practical effects and the sheer oddness become the appeal.
Nothing to manage. A cult classic they will be glad to know.

Oz remembered as a fever rather than a dream. For the right 7 year old it is the best kind of strange; for the wrong one it is the clinic scene at bedtime for a week.
