44 MILD ScoutScore

For most 10 year olds, Dune is a yes for kids who like their science fiction slow and serious. It scores 44 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, from a sustained pain ordeal used as a test early on, a poison gas attack, and a hand-to-hand kill at the very end that the story treats as a rite of passage rather than a victory. The tone stays serious throughout. The reward is a patient, political story that trusts a kid to sit still for it.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The pacing and the tone are both built for a much older audience, well before the content itself becomes the issue, and the plot requires more patience than this age can give it.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

No. The gom jabbar pain test and the ritual killing at the end are both more than this age needs, and the slow pace would lose them regardless.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

The threshold, and it depends on temperament. A patient 10 or 11 year old who likes serious science fiction handles the political plotting and the battle scenes well; one who wants action gets long stretches of talking instead.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Comfortable. The politics and the dread both land the way the film intends, and the deliberate pace becomes a strength rather than a chore at this age.

Where the big moments land

The scenes below span the whole film: an early test, a mid-film battle, and the ritual kill that ends it. The gom jabbar scene is the one to know about first, since it arrives early and sets the tone.

The bottom line

A science fiction epic that trusts a patient kid to sit still for dread instead of spectacle. Most 10 year olds who like things slow and serious are exactly the audience it was cut for.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
