For most 10 year olds, Project Hail Mary is early, and the reason is less about action than about how directly it deals with death. It scores 37 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, but the plot commits fully to its premise: a scientist wakes up alone on a one-way mission, discovers his crewmates are dead, and later reveals to his new alien friend that he will die in space once the food runs out. There is a jump scare, a tense forced sedation, and a badly injured friend screaming in pain. None of it is graphic. All of it lands.
