For most 10 year olds, Project Hail Mary is early, and the reason is less about action than about how directly it deals with death. It scores 37 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, but the plot commits fully to its premise: a scientist wakes up alone on a one-way mission, discovers his crewmates are dead, and later reveals to his new alien friend that he will die in space once the food runs out. There is a jump scare, a brief look at a crewmate's skeletal face during a space funeral, a tense forced sedation, and a badly injured friend screaming in pain. A quick vodka swig is played for a laugh. What we flagged is heavy more than gory, and all of it lands.
