For most 7 year olds, The Sheep Detectives is a yes with one real death to prepare for. It scores 35 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and almost all of it is a cozy comedic mystery: a flock of sheep investigates who poisoned their shepherd. The exception is Sebastian, a sheep with a hard past, who dies on screen fighting off the dogs that chase Lily from a slaughterhouse. The comedy carries the rest, but that one scene is genuinely sad.
A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.
Depends on how your child handles a sad on-screen death. Leaning yes otherwise: Sebastian's death and the slaughterhouse chase just before it are the two moments that land hardest on a small kid. The murder mystery itself is played for laughs and easily followed.
The target age. The mystery is clever and gentle, and Sebastian's death becomes the story's one genuine tearjerker rather than a scare, and the detective framing makes the darker turns feel like clues to solve rather than things to fear.
Easy, and the themes about memory, grief, and choosing to remember something painful land with real weight, especially the flock's debate over whether forgetting George would be a mercy or a betrayal.
Little to manage. The detective-novel structure is sharper than the premise suggests, and the puns and genre references land best for a viewer who already knows the mystery conventions being spoofed.
