44 MILD ScoutScore

For most 9 year olds, Back to the Future is a yes with a few grown-up edges tucked into a US PG rating that reads much milder today than it did in 1985. It scores 44 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, mostly from scattered language and two scenes that sit heavier than the time-travel fun around them: Doc is shot by armed men, and Biff corners Lorraine in a parking lot in a scene that is clearly meant to alarm. Kids come for the DeLorean. These two moments are what a parent should know about first.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The plot depends on following three timelines at once, and the Biff and Lorraine parking lot scene is upsetting out of context for this age even though the scene is brief.

Ages 6 to 8 DEPENDS

Leaning yes for a kid who can follow a time-travel plot. The terrorists shooting Doc and the Biff and Lorraine scene are the two moments to watch your kid's face during; both resolve quickly and the movie moves on.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

The target age. The time-travel mechanics finally click, the scattered language registers but does not alarm, and the two tense scenes read as the stakes they are meant to be rather than as something scarier.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Little to manage. The racial remark at the diner and the terrorist attack are the two beats worth a follow-up conversation about how the movie has aged.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are the real tension in an otherwise comic movie: an armed attack, a car accident, and a cornered teenager. All three resolve within minutes, which is the whole rhythm of the movie.

The bottom line

A time machine movie with two scenes that have not aged into comedy. Most 9 year olds are ready for the DeLorean and ready for the two moments that still mean business, as long as someone is nearby when Biff corners Lorraine.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
