Is Hocus Pocus OK for a 6 Year Old?

Hocus Pocus (1993) · the answer, age by age

Written by FilmScout, reviewed by Ben Fedyniak · Updated August 24, 2026

78
ScoutScore · BOLD

For most 6 year olds, Hocus Pocus plays as intended: a Halloween comedy where the witches are funny first and menacing second. It scores 78 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, which surprises parents until they remember what the score measures. The comedy sits on top of a plot about witches who drain the life from children, and the movie shows it happening. Most kids ride the jokes right past it. A few do not.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 DEPENDS

The opening act is the test. Within the first ten minutes a child is lured away and has her life drained while her brother watches, and the brother spends eternity as a cat because of it. Played with theatrical flair, but the idea is heavy for preschoolers. If your child handles villain songs and pantomime menace well, the rest is easier than the start.

Ages 6 to 8 LIKELY FINE

The sweet spot. Kids this age get the jokes, root for the teens, and treat the Sanderson sisters as the comedy act they are. The life-draining finale replays the opening idea, but by then the tone is firmly established and the good guys are clearly winning.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Pure fun, plus the mild innuendo starts landing, which is worth knowing. The running joke about the teenage hero and the repeated attention to a certain word for a young man who has not yet kissed anyone goes over younger heads and directly into this age group's.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

A nostalgia machine with nothing to flag beyond taste.

The scenes below carry nearly all of the weight in the score. If you have a sensitive child, the first one is the one to be in the room for, because it arrives before anyone has decided what kind of movie this is.

The bottom line

A Halloween staple for a reason. The score is honest about what is underneath the costume, but for most families this is menace dressed in pantomime, and kids know it.
