77 BOLD ScoutScore

For most 16 year olds, The Wolf of Wall Street is still a hard one to hand over, and that is the honest answer. It scores 77 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, for three hours that treat drugs, sex, and profanity as the entire comic engine: cocaine and quaaludes are constant, a scene of manipulation through nudity plays for tension rather than titillation, and a later scene has Jordan nearly strangle his business partner. The satire is real, but a teenager has to already see through the excess to get the joke the film is making.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. Every flag in this film, from the language to the drug use, belongs to an adult satire with nothing in it built for a small child.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

No. Nothing here is built for this age, in tone or in content, and the film does not slow down long enough to explain itself.

Ages 9 to 11 NOT YET

No. The drug use, sexual content, and profanity run through nearly every scene, not just a few isolated ones, and the satire underneath it is not yet visible at this age.

Ages 12 and up DEPENDS

Leaning older within this band. A 16 or 17 year old who already understands the film is satirizing Jordan rather than admiring him can watch it with a parent nearby for the rougher stretches. A 12 year old gets three hours of excess played as fun, with none of the irony yet in reach.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below sample the film's three main flags: drug use, sexual content, and one moment of real violence at home. All three recur throughout the run time in different forms, so these are representative, not exceptional.

8:21CautionMark Hanna lunch: cocaine, alcohol, masturbation advice
58:29CautionJordan has sex with Naomi while still married
2:03:35CautionJordan nearly strangles Donnie; Donnie chokes on food

These three are a sample. The full scene map, and live alerts that arrive before each scene while you watch, are in the FilmScout app.

The bottom line

A satire that plays its own excess for a punchline some teenagers will catch and others will simply enjoy. Hold this one for 16 or later, and watch the ending with them if you do.

Content map

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
