81 BOLD ScoutScore

For most 9 year olds, The Empire Strikes Back is the Star Wars movie that earns its reputation as the dark one. It scores 81 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, and Darth Vader kills two of his own officers by Force choke, calm and unbothered, while Han Solo is tortured off screen and frozen alive. The climax severs Luke's hand and reveals Vader as his father in the same scene. Kids who love the trilogy want this one most. It asks the most of them too.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

No, even for kids who loved the first movie. The executions and the torture chamber are pitched at an older, more patient audience than the opening trilogy entry was.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

Leaning later. A 10 or 11 year old who has seen the first film and can handle the fact that the villain wins this round is ready, with a parent nearby for the duel. A 9 year old watching for lightsabers gets the severed hand instead.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

The intended audience, and the film that gives the whole trilogy its stakes.

The bottom line

Vader kills two of his own officers, and the movie means to unsettle you with how easy it is for him. For most 9 year olds it earns its reputation as the dark one; the hand and the reveal are worth the wait.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
