72 BOLD ScoutScore

For most 10 year olds, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the series' hardest turn yet, and the number agrees. It scores 72 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, the highest in the series so far, mostly from two scenes: Bellatrix uses the Cruciatus Curse on Harry, and Sirius is killed in front of him. Umbridge's detention, where she makes Harry cut words into his own hand with a blood quill, is the other scene parents ask about. Kids who have followed the series this far want it. It asks more of them than any Potter movie before it.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The blood quill detention and Sirius's death are built for kids who already know and love these characters, not for an introduction to the series.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

Still no for most, even fans of the earlier movies. The torture scenes and Sirius's death sit past what this age needs, however familiar the characters are.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

The honest threshold. A 10 or 11 year old who has followed the series and can sit with Sirius's death and the Cruciatus Curse scenes, ideally with a parent nearby, is ready. One who is still on the earlier movies should catch up first.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

The intended audience by now. The torture and the death land as the stakes they are meant to be, not as something to brace against.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are the blood quill, the torture, and the death that decide the score. Sirius's death is the one to be in the room for, not just present for.

The bottom line

The series' hardest turn yet, with a death and a torture scene played completely straight. Most 10 year olds who have grown up with these characters are ready to cross it with you, but cross it deliberately rather than mid-marathon.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.

Direction is the kind of content flagged. Reach is the ScoutScore, which is how much there is: green at the centre, yellow, orange, then red at the dotted line, which is 100. The scale has no ceiling, so a shape can cross it.
