Is Despicable Me OK for a 5 Year Old?

Despicable Me (2010) · the answer, age by age

33 MILD ScoutScore

For most 5 year olds, Despicable Me is an easy yes. It scores 33 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and the flags are mostly about tone rather than danger: Gru threatens the girls at bedtime as part of his villain act, his own mother dismisses him throughout the movie, and a late kidnapping sets up the rescue. Each flag passes quickly, and the kidnapping is wrapped up in the climactic rescue.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 LIKELY FINE

Yes. Gru's bedtime threats are clearly a joke to everyone but the girls for a moment, and that moment resolves fast, well before it has a chance to actually worry a small kid watching along.

Ages 6 to 8 LIKELY FINE

The target. The orphanage scenes and Gru's mother's put-downs land as emotional beats rather than scares, and the kidnapping rescue plays as an exciting climax.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Easy, and the jokes about Gru's backstory with his mother start to land as the real heart of the movie, more than the heist or the shrink ray ever do.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Little to manage. A comfort watch at any age by now, and the jokes about Gru's awkward parenting land differently once a kid is old enough to notice how often grown-ups get things wrong too.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are the bedtime threats, the return to the orphanage, and the kidnapping rescue. Each one asks little of a 5 year old; the orphanage scene is the one that occasionally tugs harder than the rest.

The bottom line

A villain movie where most of its danger lives in feelings, and so do most of the flags. Most 5 year olds sail through Gru's bedtime scowl and the big rescue without a second thought, and some end up rooting for the mother to apologize more than for the heist.

Content map

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.

Direction is the kind of content flagged. Reach is the ScoutScore, which is how much there is: green at the centre, yellow, orange, then red at the dotted line, which is 100. The scale has no ceiling, so a shape can cross it.
