20 TAME ScoutScore

For most 4 year olds, WALL-E is a yes, and the hardest part is not a monster but a friendship put through real damage. It scores 20 on the ScoutScore, in the Tame tier, from a robot mutiny that electrocutes WALL-E and a later scene where he is crushed nearly to the point of death while saving a plant. Both resolve, but the second one plays out slowly enough that small kids feel the weight of it. The trash-covered Earth and the passengers who forgot how to walk are gentle by comparison.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 LIKELY FINE

Mostly yes. The scene where AUTO crushes WALL-E is the one that runs long and may worry a sensitive small kid, since the movie lets it sit before the rescue.

Ages 6 to 8 LIKELY FINE

Prime territory. The near-wordless love story carries the movie, and the environmental themes register as a gentle backdrop rather than a lesson.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Easy, and the satire about consumer dependence starts to land as intended.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

A quiet favorite at any age. Little to manage.

The bottom line

A little robot survives a mutiny and a crushing so complete it looks like the end, and the movie trusts kids to sit with that fear before the fix arrives. Most 4 year olds are fine with the quiet parts; the AUTO scenes near the end are the ones to watch together.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
