19 MILD ScoutScore

For most 4 year olds, Elf is an easy yes, with two things worth knowing. It scores 19 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and none of its flags is a frightening scene. What surprises parents is the adult seasoning: Buddy gets visibly drunk in the mailroom, played entirely for laughs, and a few jokes (a breast-feeding line, a shower mixup, an "up yours") are aimed over kids' heads.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 LIKELY FINE

Yes. The department store Santa fight is the closest thing to conflict, and it is played entirely for laughs.

Ages 6 to 8 LIKELY FINE

Prime territory. They will quote it for years.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Easy, and the adult jokes start to land without ever being crude.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

A holiday fixture. Little to manage.

Where the big moments land

The flags below are the whole list. The mailroom drinking is the one most parents want to know about, and it is comedy from start to finish.

The bottom line

Sweetness delivered at full volume, with a little adult seasoning kids will not catch. If you want the first Christmas movie for a 4 year old, this is still it.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.

Direction is the kind of content flagged. Reach is the ScoutScore, which is how much there is: green at the centre, yellow, orange, then red at the dotted line, which is 100. The scale has no ceiling, so a shape can cross it.
