98 STRONG ScoutScore

For most 15 year olds, The Shawshank Redemption is a genuine yes, and the wait is worth it. It scores 98 on the ScoutScore, in the Strong tier, for a prison drama that never looks away: Andy is assaulted by the Sisters more than once, a guard beats a new inmate unconscious on the first night, and an older inmate's release ends in suicide. The movie handles each of these with restraint rather than spectacle. What it buys is one of the most patient, hopeful stories in the catalog, and it earns every minute of the wait.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. This is a slow, dialogue-heavy prison drama built entirely for an adult audience, and neither its ideas nor its violence belong anywhere near a small child. The pacing alone would lose a child this age long before the content became the issue.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

Still no. Nothing about the story, the pace, or the setting is built for this age, and the film asks for a kind of patience and moral reasoning that comes much later.

Ages 9 to 11 NOT YET

Still no. The first-night beating, Andy's repeated assaults, and Brooks's suicide are all handled with restraint, but restraint is not gentleness, and an 11 year old is not the audience this movie was cut for.

Ages 12 and up DEPENDS

The honest threshold, and it leans older within this band. A mature 15 or 16 year old who can sit with prison violence, a suicide, and two patient hours gets one of the best stories in the catalog. A 12 year old looking for action gets restlessness instead of the intended slow burn.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are spread across the film's two hours, each a different kind of violence: an assault, a suicide, and a murder ordered from above. They are spread out rather than clustered, so the weight is steady for the whole run time.

The bottom line

A prison story that settles into patience rather than despair, and asks a teenager to sit with real cruelty before it hands them real hope. Wait until 15 or so, then watch it together and talk about what Andy chooses to become.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
