For most 10 year olds, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a yes with a darker family story than the first movie let on. It scores 57 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, and the hard scene is not the space battles: it is a cavern of children's bones, a father who caused his own partner's death, and Yondu's sacrifice at the end. The jokes are as constant as ever. What they are covering for, this time, is real grief about who gets to be family.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The cavern of children's bones and Ego's confession about causing Meredith's death are both heavier than the space-opera comedy around them suggests, and neither is softened for a small child.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

Still no for most. Yondu's sacrifice is genuinely moving but the cavern scene and the sustained finale battle on Ego's planet run long and dark for this age, even with the jokes layered on top.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

The real threshold. A 10 or 11 year old who can take the cavern of bones and a villain's confession about killing someone's mother handles the rest fine, since the comedy returns right after each hard beat.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Comfortable, and Yondu's arc about family chosen over family by blood lands as the actual point of the movie at this age, rather than a sad detour from the jokes.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are the cavern discovery, Ego's confession, and the finale battle where Yondu dies, back to back in the last thirty minutes, which is where all of the movie's real weight sits.

The bottom line

Vol. 2 keeps its jokes standing guard over a genuinely sad story about fathers, the one who failed and the one who did not have to try. Yes at 10, and the cavern of bones is the scene to know is coming before it arrives.
