For most 5 year olds, Wonka is a yes with a real streak of cruelty toward one child character. It scores 39 on the ScoutScore, in the Mild tier, and most of it is whimsical chaos, gin gags and a chocolate that gets a zoo guard comically drunk. The exception is Noodle, an orphan locked in a laundry-room boarding house who is dragged by the ear, thrown in a coop, and later revealed to have been abandoned as a baby by her own uncle. The finale traps her and Willy in rising liquid chocolate for several tense minutes before it resolves happily.
A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.
Leaning yes. The musical numbers and Willy's optimism carry most small kids through easily, but Mrs. Scrubitt's treatment of Noodle, being grabbed, locked up, and called names, is real cruelty toward a child character and may need a word beforehand.
The target age. The chocolate-factory whimsy is the main event, and Noodle's mistreatment resolves into a genuine rescue and a family found rather than lost.
Easy, and the themes about who gets believed and who gets exploited, a cartel bribing the police among them, start to register at this age.
Nothing to manage. A charming prequel that holds up on its own songs, even for viewers who never much cared for the earlier versions of this story.

Download for iPhoneWonka plays as sweetness with a debt collector at the door, and Noodle's storyline is where that debt gets collected in full. Most 5 year olds are ready for the whimsy, and the handful of scenes where an adult is genuinely cruel to a child are worth watching together.
