Is Wicked OK for a 6 Year Old?

Wicked (2024) · Rated PG · the answer, age by age

Written by FilmScout, reviewed by Ben Fedyniak · Updated August 24, 2026

51
ScoutScore · BOLD

For most 6 year olds, Wicked is a long but happy yes. It scores 51 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, and nearly all of that comes from one late sequence where the Wizard's monkeys are painfully transformed and caged. The rest is a musical about two girls learning to be friends and then choosing different roads, with the themes about prejudice and propaganda playing at whatever depth your child can reach.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 DEPENDS

The length is the first question: nearly three hours with an intermission-shaped ending. The monkey transformation is the only scene that genuinely frightens small kids, since the animals scream and sprout wings against their will. If your child can sit through it, the rest is spectacle and song.

Ages 6 to 8 LIKELY FINE

The audience it found. The bullying of Elphaba, the cruelty toward the animal teachers, and the monkeys all land as meaningful rather than scary, and kids this age argue about who was right all the way home.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Effortless, and the political layer about a Wizard who invents an enemy to unite his people starts to register.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Nothing to flag. The sequel's darker turn is the conversation to have before they see that one.

Where the big moments land

One scene carries the score. It arrives late, it is loud, and it resolves into the movie's biggest number within minutes.

The bottom line

A villain origin sung in full daylight, which is exactly why small kids can take it. Plan the runtime, know the monkey scene, and say yes.
