50 BOLD ScoutScore

For most 11 year olds, The Return of the King is the one to wait for, even if they have already watched the first two. It scores 50 on the ScoutScore, just inside the Bold tier, but the number undersells it: this is the trilogy's heaviest entry, with Shelob's spider ambush, Denethor's death by fire during the Battle of Pelennor Fields, and Frodo losing a finger to Gollum's bite at Mount Doom. The ending is long, and it earns every minute of its goodbyes.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The spider, the burning steward, and the finger-biting climax are built for an audience that already loves these characters, not for a first watch.

Ages 6 to 8 NOT YET

Still no for most, even kids who handled the first two. The scale of the battle and Denethor's death by fire sit past what this age needs, and the ending's length makes it harder to sit through, not easier.

Ages 9 to 11 DEPENDS

The honest threshold. A 10 or 11 year old who sailed through Fellowship and Two Towers and can handle Shelob's lair and a battlefield death is ready, ideally with the finger-biting scene talked through rather than skipped past. A kid who is still catching up on the series should finish the first two first.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

The intended audience, and the payoff the first two movies were building toward. Little new to manage beyond what the earlier movies already asked of them.

The bottom line

The trilogy's heaviest chapter, built to be earned rather than rushed. Give it to a kid who has already loved the first two, sit through Shelob and the fire together, and let the ending close every door the first two movies left open.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
