54 BOLD ScoutScore

For most 9 year olds, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is a yes with real menace stirred into the swashbuckling. It scores 54 on the ScoutScore, in the Bold tier, from skeleton pirates revealed in moonlight, a blood ritual to lift their curse, a ship-boarding battle, and a hanging threatened more than once. Jack and Elizabeth also drink rum on screen, one of the few flags that is not about danger. The sword fights are fun. The curse reveal is the one built to startle.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 NOT YET

No. The skeleton crew reveal and the blood ritual are designed to be unsettling, and the hanging threats are real stakes for the characters, not the kind of danger this age can shrug off easily.

Ages 6 to 8 DEPENDS

Leaning yes for kids who like pirates and can handle a jump-scare reveal. The skeleton transformation in moonlight is the scene to know about going in; it resolves into adventure rather than staying scary.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

The target. The curse, the duels, and the rum are all part of the genre at this age, and the hanging threats read as plot rather than real danger.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

Little to manage. The franchise only gets more elaborate from here, and this first entry still plays as the tightest and least complicated of the series for a teenager meeting Jack Sparrow for the first time.

Where the big moments land

The three scenes below are the blood ritual, the boarding battle, and the final duel in the treasure cave. The blood ritual is the one that briefly turns the adventure dark; the other two are swashbuckling at full scale.

The bottom line

A pirate adventure with a real curse stitched into the fun, not just the name of one. Most 9 year olds handle the skeletons and the swordplay easily, with the blood ritual as the one moment worth a quick word beforehand.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
