29 TAME ScoutScore

For most 4 year olds, Monsters, Inc. is an easy yes. It scores 29 on the ScoutScore, in the Tame tier, from a scare factory whose bosses lie to keep the lights on, a machine built to forcibly pull a scream out of Mike, and a toddler who wanders into a world where she is treated as toxic. Nothing here is built to actually frighten a preschooler. The company's rhetoric about dangerous children is played entirely for adult-level irony that goes over small heads.

A ScoutScore is a living number. We re-check movies against the source and raise or lower it when we find something the first pass missed, so a score you see today can differ from one you saw last month.

Age by age

Under 6 LIKELY FINE

Yes. The scream extractor is the one scene with real tension, and it resolves into a rescue within a minute, the pattern the whole movie follows.

Ages 6 to 8 LIKELY FINE

Prime territory. The buddy comedy between Sulley and Mike carries the story, and Boo's farewell is the only moment that might bring a tear.

Ages 9 to 11 LIKELY FINE

Easy, and the corporate-cover-up plot becomes a satisfying mystery rather than background noise.

Ages 12 and up LIKELY FINE

A comfort watch at any age. Little to manage.

The scenes below are the film's one real threat scene and its two emotional turns. Boo's farewell is the moment to have a tissue ready for.

The bottom line

A scare factory runs on a lie that nearly costs a toddler her way home, and the boss turns out to be the villain. Most 4 year olds handle the door chase easily; the scream extractor is the one scene worth watching their face during.

How the scenes we flagged in this movie divide up by kind. These are shares of what was flagged, not a level, and not a promise about anything we did not flag: a movie with very little flagged content can still be 80% one kind.
